Chillicothe, Ohio's first capital is a fountain of Ohio's historical past. The Ross County Heritage Center offers exhibits of the Northwest Territory, Ohio's first capital, historical arts and much more including the Knole's Log House which illustrates life in early Ohio. The Franklin House, a museum dedicated to women's history is on the grounds of the Center. Home to Ohio's 6th Governor, the Adena Mansion and Gardens is an early 1800s mansion restored to its original glory. The estate includes 5 outbuildings, formal gardens featuring 3 terraces of flowers and vegetables. Tecumseh, the legendary Shawnee leader, comes to life at the Sugarloaf Amphitheater. As you sit under the stars this ultimate outdoor drama surrounds you with galloping horses, live military cannons and the most dazzling battle sequences offered on the American stage. The Hopewell culture was centered on Chillicothe from about 200BC to 500AD. This culture built earthworks of various shapes as well as mounds as well a finely crafted artifacts providing insight into the lives of the Hopewell culture.
